How to Care for your Jewellery

You spent a little time dreaming about it, a little (lot) of time obsessing over it and now you’ve decided to take the plunge. So now that you’ve committed, you’re probably wondering how to keep your jewellery in your life for as long as possible! Well rest assured that the best way to look after your jewellery is about to be explained to you so take a seat, pop on your Franc, and be prepared to be educated!

Valued for its versatility, beauty and easy wearing, sterling silver may be worn every day without fading. All sterling silver will oxidise slightly and tarnish over time, but that’s fine, you just have to know how to deal with the situation! To care for your piece, simply polish it with a silver polishing cloth or dip it in a gentle silver cleaning solution. Silver is a delicate material, so remember to treat your piece with love. Please contact us or visit us in-store if you would like to purchase a Francesca silver polishing cloth to keep your silver looking like new!

So think of it like this right, gold/silver plating is a method of bonding a thin layer of liquid gold/silver onto the surface of another metal by electrochemical plating. Did you know that one micron equals one millionth of a meter? You won’t find that on a ruler, trust us, we’ve looked! Francesca pieces are of the highest quality with plating thickness varying from 1 to 3 microns. To care for your piece, avoid wearing it in water and take care when using perfume, foundation, tanning products and lotion. So if you’ve ended up in the shower and realised you’re still wearing your plated pieces (we’ve all been there), just take a deep breath, remove your piece and leave it to dry until you’re done!

Tarnishing is subject to change due to the acidity of the wearer’s skin, and exposure to such products. Tarnishing is not a manufacturing fault and if you would like a piece which can be worn every day without tarnishing, we recommend our Noir Solid Gold range. It’s super important to look after your plated pieces - think of it like a sheet of paper compared to a sheet of cardboard, it’s easier to tear!

Five ways to extend the life of your plated products

1. Remove your plated products before showering, washing up and swimming as soaps, saltwater and chlorine can damage the plating.

2. Put your plated pieces on after applying lotions, soaps and perfumes.

3. Avoid rubbing your pieces against each other or against other metals such as car keys.

4. Clean with lukewarm water without rubbing them too hard or with anything too brittle.

5. Store your plated jewellery in a pouch or soft cloth separate from other jewellery.

With the elegance and beauty of gold, gold filled jewellery is a long wearing alternative to solid gold without the price tag! Featuring a layer of 14k solid gold bonded to brass, our gold filled collection may be worn everyday without tarnishing.

Gold filled has approximately 100 times more gold than a plated piece  - epic right!?! If looked after properly, gold filled pieces can last anywhere between 5 to 30 years, how cool is that?! To care for your piece avoid wearing it in water or exposing it to chemicals. Clean it with warm water and a soft cloth.

The metal of royals, gold has long been revered for its rarity and timeless beauty. Unlike many other metals, gold will never tarnish or fade, making it perfect for everyday wear. So hallelujah for not having to remove them every single time you jump in the shower, am I right! To care for your piece, simply polish it with a gold polishing cloth or dip it in warm water, using a mild detergent.

Please avoid swimming in chlorine or saltwater and all contact with chemicals. Gold is a delicate material, so remember to treat your new piece with love. Guess what else is pretty spesh?! We give you a free gold polishing cloth with every piece purchased! Yass!
